Rio Ferdinand asks for a softer punishment © EuroFootball.com

Manchester "United" defender Rio Ferdinand met with a commission that handed him an 8-month suspension for failing to attend a doping test. Ferdinand has been suspended from January.

The 25-year-old, highest-paid defender, hopes that the punishment will be reduced to six months so he can play for the English national team in the European Championship held in Portugal.

Rio Ferdinand, who will also have to pay an 80,000 euro fine, claimed that he missed the doping test due to forgetfulness. The Englishman adamantly denied ever using drugs.

Rio Ferdinand arrived from Leeds "United" club for 30 million pounds sterling.
