The ongoing unrest in London poses a threat to the start of the English Premier League season scheduled for the weekend.
"We are in talks with London clubs, police and government officials to assess whether matches in the capital can go ahead," the Premier League statement said, adding that a decision could be made on Thursday.
Three matches are planned in London on Saturday: Tottenham are set to host Everton, Fulham will play against Aston Villa, and Queens Park Rangers will face Bolton.
