Dutchman Ronald Koeman officially announced that he is stepping down from his position as head coach of the Lisbon club and has signed a two-year contract with a club from his homeland.
The former Amsterdam Ajax coach managed to secure third place in the Portuguese championship with Benfica this season and reached the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League. However, Benfica did not secure the right to compete in the Champions League next season, which is believed to be one of the main reasons why the Dutchman decided to leave the club.
Koeman took over as head coach of Benfica from the Italian Giovanni Trapattoni before this season, whose team won the Portuguese championship for the first time in the last 11 years last season.
In the PSV club, Koeman will replace Guus Hiddink, who is leaving the team at the end of the season to become the coach of the Russian national team, and who helped the club win their 19th Dutch championship title this season.
