Tuesday evening saw eight matches of the 4th round of the A-D groups in the UEFA Champions League.
An intriguing clash was expected in the Italian capital, but Roma did not receive any resistance from the London-based Chelsea team. Antonio Conte's players were crushed in Rome - the hosts celebrated a 3-0 victory.
More was expected from this duel - at least from Chelsea. They were helpless - failing to create dangerous opportunities and being punished by their opponents for every mistake.
The first goal came less than a minute into the game - Stephan El Shaarawy scored the fastest goal in this Champions League season with a brilliant shot.
Chelsea tried to recover from the shock, but were punished again in the 36th minute when Thibaut Courtois was beaten by S. El Shaarawy after a pass from Radja Nainggolan.
In the second half, Chelsea showed no desire to return to the game, and in the 63rd minute, Diego Perotti scored a fine goal to seal the victory.
Another unexpected result in the same group was between Madrid's Atletico and the modest Azerbaijani club Qarabag. Diego Simeone's team failed to beat their opponents for the second time in a row, as the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
In Group C, Roma climbed to the top spot after their victory, while Chelsea dropped to second place. Atletico has only gathered 3 points and risks not making it to the quarterfinals.
In other group matches, Manchester United comfortably defeated Benfica, while CSKA Moscow defeated Basel in a closely contested match.
In Group B, Bayern Munich, missing Robert Lewandowski, had difficulties against Celtic but managed to secure a place in the quarterfinals with a narrow victory.
In Group D, Barcelona lost their first points of the season against Olympiakos, and Juventus failed to overcome Sporting Lisbon.
