On Saturday, six matches of the German football championship were played in the first round. The hosts won three matches, while the other three ended in draws. The first round was notable for the abundance of cards - a total of 29 yellow and 2 red cards were shown in seven matches.
The newcomers of the Bundesliga started the season excellently. The "Koln" club, in front of 50 thousand spectators, managed to defeat the "Mainz" team after a tough battle. The only goal of the match was scored in the 87th minute by the newcomer B.Schlicke. On the other hand, the other league newcomer, the "Duisburg" team, surprised in a tense match at home and achieved a draw against the favorites of the championship, the "Stuttgart" club.
In another match, the "Hamburger" team easily defeated the resistance of "Nurnberg" at home and secured a victory with a 3-0 result. One goal for the port city club was scored by the Belgian E.Mpenza, while the Bosnian S.Barbarez added two more.
The "Werder" team also started the season successfully - the Bremen footballers defeated "Arminia" 5-2 in a high-scoring match. "Werder" started the competition very actively - in the first half, their opponents from Bielefeld had to equalize the score twice. "Werder" did not slow down the pace and soon "Arminia" conceded another goal, after which they failed to recover. At the end of the match, the hosts scored two more goals and finally overwhelmed their opponents.
Another interesting match took place between the "Wolfsburg" and Dortmund's "Borussia" clubs. After an eventful battle, the result ended in a 2-2 draw. It is worth mentioning that the goalkeeper N.Sahin played the entire match in the ranks of "Borussia".
The same result followed in another match between the "Hannover" and Berlin's "Hertha" clubs. After about an hour of play, the capital footballers were leading 0-2, but the hosts did not give up - in the 67th minute, C.Dabrowski softened the score, and in the 88th minute, M.Tarnat saved his team from defeat and secured a draw.
