In the Lithuanian Championship of the "A Lyga" on Saturday, the second round of matches were played. Unexpected victories were achieved by the clubs "Vilnius" and "Šilutė", who respectively defeated "Kaunas" and Klaipėda "Atlantas" at home, thus only "Vėtra" and "Ekranas" teams remain unbeaten. The biggest surprise was recorded in Vilnius at the "Žalgiris" stadium where the local team "Vilnius" managed to recover from the failure of the first round and defeated the defending champions FBK "Kaunas". The guests started the match more actively and were close to scoring a goal when G.Barevičius' shot from the wing bounced off the crossbar. Despite the territorial advantage of the Kaunas team advancing, in the 38th minute "Vilnius" broke through - goalkeeper E.Kurskis brought down N.Astrauskas in the penalty area and M.Panka converted the penalty kick. At the beginning of the second half, after R.Beniušio's pass, A.Velička missed a hundred percent chance to equalize the score from about six meters away. However, the "Kaunas" game stalled and "Vilnius" constantly threatened the opponents with counterattacks, although they lacked accuracy in their finishing. The decisive assault was organized by "Kaunas" only at the beginning of extra time, when shots from A.Rimkevičius and T.Tamošauskas flew by the side, and in the final moments "Vilnius" somehow defended against two attempts to score with a header. Thus, the final result of the match could be considered a sensation, especially given that last season "Kaunas" lost only three times, while "Vilnius" finished last in the league. In other matches played in Vilnius, the capital's derby saw "Vėtra" and "Žalgiris" facing off, and the home team celebrated a 2-0 victory, with the opening goal coming in the first minute when the Nigerian I.A.Douglas shot from afar, and in the second half, A.Kochanauskas doubled the lead after confusing two defenders over an eight-minute period. This was the second consecutive victory for "Vėtra", while "Žalgiris" suffered their first defeat. The Klaipėda "Atlantas" suffered a surprise defeat to "Šilutė" in a very unsuccessful maritime derby. "Atlantas" played very poorly throughout the match and their hopes were not justified, with the Legionnaire player from Poland, M.Piochas, failing to make an impact. After a beautiful combination in the midfield, M.Grigalevičius sprang towards the goalkeeper and scored a beautiful goal. Shortly after the start of the second half, after a mistake by the "Atlantas" defender R.Maciulevičius, G.Juška scored his first goal of the match. Soon after, G.Juška scored his third goal. At the end of the match, "Atlantas" could have softened the result when R.Žvingilas was brought down in the penalty area, but D.Žernys missed the penalty kick. The leader of the championship became Panevėžys "Ekranas", who won at home against Marijampolė "Sūduva" thanks to goals from A.Kučys and M.Gardzijauskas. In other matches, with a two-goal margin, the league debutants "Šiauliai" celebrated a victory over "Nevėžis", as two players from this team scored own goals. In these matches, the residents of Šiauliai played without their two main attackers, Denis Vasilkov and Gintaras Siciūnas, who suffered injuries. However, even without their main offensive leaders, "Šiauliai" secured a 2-0 victory, and towards the end of the first half, "Nevėžis" goalkeeper Marius Poškus received a red card for a handball outside the penalty area, and will miss the match against Vilnius "Žalgiris" on Tuesday. In his place, eighteen-year-old Tautvydas Jazokas stood in goal for "Nevėžis," successfully defending against "Šiauliai's" attacks. After the match, "Šiauliai" coach Vytas Jančiauskas was not very satisfied with the team's performance: "We had a significant advantage throughout the match. A lot of technical mistakes by the players prevented us from turning the advantage into goals. We didn't capitalize on many opportunities. I don't know what happened with the players - there were many illogical decisions in their actions. Perhaps this can be explained by a strong desire to score, so when the players needed to play a wall pass, they kicked the ball, and when they needed to dribble, they made illogical passes." "We should have won by a much larger margin. "Nevėžis" played bravely, but they still find it difficult to play because the team was put together just before the season," - concluded the former "Vėtra" strategist.
