During a tribute to a football hooligan killed during an ethnic conflict, mass clashes between hooligans and police erupted in two cities in Russia.

28-year-old Egor Sviridov was murdered in the northern part of Moscow during a clash between football hooligans and immigrants from the North Caucasus. The suspect was already apprehended by the police.

Thousands of fans - openly referred to as "football hooligans" in the Russian press - decided to pay tribute to their fellow hooligan who had departed from life in Anapil in central Moscow over the weekend near the famous Red Square, but they did not have permission to do so.

As mass clashes broke out, riot police used force, tear gas, and through loudspeakers urged the hooligans with bottles, stones, and masked faces to calm down.

Similar events also took place in Saint Petersburg, but the number of hooligans there was smaller.
