After the Champions League match between "Real" team and "Wolfsburg" ending in a 0:2 loss for Madrid, Steve McManaman did not hesitate to criticize the defense of the Spanish club.
The former friend of the current "Real" head coach Zinedine Zidane in Madrid did not hold back in criticizing the defense of "Real", with the sharpest criticism directed towards the Brazilian players.
"I think they were pitiful. After a great performance over the weekend, now they looked very bad. The full-backs on the right (Danilo) and left (Marcelo) were just running around like headless chickens, while the center-back pair of Pepe and Sergio Ramos seemed like they were playing together for the first time. I was shocked by how bad they were. I was expecting calm and calculated play. But in defense, they played like a team of 10 or 12-year-olds. When conceding the second goal, Marcelo was just standing with his hands behind his back, and Arnold scored because of it, running ahead of Ramos," former player said in the BT Sport studio.
However, McManaman did not blame the team's coach. According to him, the players did not follow Zidane's instructions during the match.
"It seemed like the coach on the sideline was just begging them to pull themselves together. It looked like they were playing the way they wanted in these matches. The image was glaring. You cannot blame the coach for telling the same team, which won against Barcelona on Saturday, to 'just go out and do it again'," McManaman said.
The return match between "Wolfsburg" and "Real" will take place on April 12 in Madrid. In order to reach the semifinals, "Real" must overturn the two-goal advantage gained by the opponents.
