After the break in the Lithuanian championship, the football club "Kauno Žalgiris" will step with a new head coach.
Taking over the position of acting head coach for a while, Nerijus Mačiulis will be replaced by Saulius Širmelis, who joined the team a month ago.
N. Mačiulis took over the team's reins in April, when the club said goodbye to Glenn Stahl.
"Nerijus has saved the team many times when it needed it most and took on the position of acting coach. We are very grateful to him for that, but now our paths diverge," commented the club president Mantas Kalnietis on the decision.
Having accumulated forty years of coaching experience, S. Širmelis has coached the teams Ukmergė "Vienybė", Vilnius "Žalgiris", "Panerys", "Polonija", Kaunas "Atletas", "Šiauliai", Panevėžys "Ekrantas", Marijampolė "Sūduva" and FBK "Kaunas", as well as worked in foreign clubs - "Ventspils" and "Jelgava" (Latvia), "Tatran" (Slovakia), "Atlantis" (Finland), "Eskilstuna" (Sweden), "Akzhayik", "Ordabasy" and "Shakhter" (Kazakhstan).
S. Širmelis will make his debut at the helm of the team in friendly matches against the team from Daugpilis, and his first test in the Lithuanian championship will come on June 15, in a match against Alytus "Dainava".
