Madrid's "Real" hopes of regaining the King's Cup title after five years collapsed along with a painful defeat to their arch-rivals.
On Wednesday, the second leg of the King's Cup semi-final took place at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium. Despite creating several excellent opportunities, "Real" was punished for their missed chances by "Barcelona" - in the second half of the match, a revived Luis Suarez scored a brace and helped the Catalans advance to the final with a score of 3:0.
After the match, a visibly disappointed Santiago Solari appeared at the press conference, expressing his joy at the team's performance in the first half but acknowledging poor finishing.
"Football is a game where efficiency determines everything. We played quite well, showed the right energy, but we were not assured in front of goal," said Solari, who most likely lost his job for next season with this defeat.
"We exited the tournament honorably, but it is very difficult to accept this failure. We had our chances in the first half and could have equalized the score when it was still 0:1.
I never thought we would lose control of the match. However, our opponents scored with their first attempt, and eventually, gifted us an own goal.
We did not score when we had the chance to do so. You cannot add anything more about these matches," the Argentinean did not hide his disappointment.
For Madrid's "Real" team, this season practically leaves them with only one hope - their beloved UEFA Champions League. Next week, the "whites" will strive to finish the work started against Ajax from Amsterdam.
In the "La Liga" championships, "Real" is currently in third place. They are nine points behind the leaders "Barcelona."
