On Thursday evening Japan time, two more teams secured their spot in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Japan's national team defeated Australia 2-0 on the road. The rising Sun's victory saw Kaoru Mitoma scoring a late double. After this victory, Japan moved past Australia in the standings, leaving them in third place and securing at least second place in the group, guaranteeing them a spot in the World Cup. Saudi Arabia's footballers will also secure at least second place in the group, meaning they will qualify for the World Cup in Qatar for the second consecutive time. In another Asian qualifying group, the first two spots have already been determined by Iran and South Korea. Australia will need to win two additional matches to qualify for the World Cup. One against an Asian team that finishes third in another group, and then against representatives of South America.
