Scandal in Germany: country's football federation suspected of tax evasion

The German law enforcement conducted a raid at the headquarters of the German Football Association (DFB) suspecting it of tax evasion. The corruption allegations are related to the organization of the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

According to the German newspaper "Bild", the homes of former DFB president Wolfgang Niersbach and his successor Theo Zwanziger were also searched.

It is reported that DFB had set up a secret account with around 6.7 million euros in it. The money was transferred from the DFB organizing committee directly to a FIFA account. It is suspected that this was simply a bribe for the opportunity to organize the championship.

W. Niersbach claimed that this money helped secure greater FIFA funding. DFB denies all allegations. They first became public about a month ago in the newspaper "Die Spiegel".
