"Serie A" championship could be reduced to 18 teams

Italian Football Federation (FIGC) President Carlo Tavecchio hopes that in the 2016-2017 season of the Italian football championships, there will start not 20, but 18 teams.

Lately, there has been more talk about the need to reduce the number of clubs participating in the "Serie A" tournament, as this would raise the level of the championship and reduce the workload for football players.

In an interview with the newspaper "Corriere della Sera," C. Tavecchio shared FIGC's goals: "In 2015, we have two main tasks to implement - to reduce the "Serie A" championships to 18 clubs and secure a place in the" EURO 2016 "championship."

"We will vote on this issue on June 30th. After adopting new directives, there will be 18 teams playing in the "Serie A" championship, twenty in the "Serie B" (currently 23), and we have not yet decided on the "Lega Pro"," said C. Tavecchio.

In the strongest Italian league, 20 clubs have been competing since the summer of 2004. Until then, the number of teams playing in the championships was exactly the number they want to achieve after a few seasons - 18.
