Luis Suarez scored his debut goal, and Liverpool started the era without Fernando Torres with a convincing 2-0 victory against Stoke.
In the first half, Stoke's goalkeeper Asmir Begovic impressively saved Glen Johnson's header, but soon after the break, Raul Meireles put Liverpool ahead with a powerful left-footed shot.
On the other side of the field, John Carew missed the target, and the hosts' lead was secured after Luis Suarez, who came on as a substitute, appeared on the field: the Uruguayan jumped against the goalkeeper, dribbled past him, and weakly pushed the ball towards the goal, but despite defender Andy Wilkinson's desperate efforts, it ended up in the net.
