Today in Marijampolė there was a celebration - after a 30-year break, the "Sūduva" team won the bronze medals of the Lithuanian "A lyga" championship. The team from Suvalkija won 1-0 against Vilnius "Žalgiris" away and collected two points more than Vilnius "Vėtra". The bronze medals would have belonged to the people of Marijampolė even if they had played a draw.
"Did the men feel nervous before the match? They felt a great responsibility. The match was very intense, of a good level. If all championship matches were marked by such tense, beautiful battles, Lithuanian football would win. Both "Sūduva" and "Žalgiris" played well. The people of Vilnius had opportunities to score, they broke through to our goal several times. The people of Marijampolė demonstrated more of a combination football," said the head coach of "Sūduva" Algimantas Gabrys to the official website of "A lyga".
According to him, "Sūduva" scored a goal of rare beauty: "Tomas Radzinevičius passed the ball to Darius Maciulevičius, who struck without stopping. The ball flew into the upper right corner of the goal. I doubt if it was possible to defend the goal against such a perfect shot."
Asked how he plans to celebrate the victory, the coach replied: "We'll see. I know that trade in Marijampolė will definitely pick up. On Monday we will be invited to the mayor's office, our sponsors promise to honor us."
