Surprises in the King's Cup quarter-finals © EuroFootball.com

On Wednesday in Spain, the first matches of the Copa del Rey quarterfinals took place, with no shortage of surprises. One of the biggest sensations was presented by the leaders of the second division "Valladolid", who defeated the "Villarreal" footballers, who reached the UEFA Champions League semifinals last season, 2-1 at home.

Another unexpected result was recorded in the match between "Rayo Vallecano" and the leaders of the Spanish championship "Sevilla". The third division club managed to withstand the strong attack of the Sevilla club and fought to a 0-0 draw.

However, "Barcelona" did not face much resistance from their opponents "Alaves", as they defeated the second division team 2-0 thanks to two goals from Javier Saviola. The match was marked by clashes between local fans and police, as fans protested in the second half against the leadership of "Alaves" president Dimitrij Piterman.

In other matches, "Zaragoza" crushed the second division team "Malaga" 3-0 away, while La Coruna's "Deportivo" defeated "Mallorca" footballers 2-1 away.

Another surprise was almost recorded in the suburbs of Madrid, where "Getafe" led for almost the entire match - Veljko Paunović scored with a header to put the hosts ahead in the first minute of the match - but Spain's national team goalkeeper David Silva equalized the result with an impressive strike in the 90th minute.

One match was played on Tuesday - Madrid's "Atletico" had to settle for a 1-1 draw at home against "Osasuna", as they finished the match with ten men.

Another match will be played today (Thursday) - the winners of the 2005 cup, Sevilla's "Betis", will host the frequent underperforming Madrid "Real".

The second leg matches will be played in a week - on January 17.
