Former Arsenal defender Tony Adams insists that by purchasing Mesut Ozil for over 40 million pounds, the club insulted another one of their own, Jack Wilshere.
The German international arrived in England from Real Madrid in September 2013 and has since played in almost 150 matches for the Gunners.
Ozil became one of the team's leaders, but this meant that academy product Wilshere lost the trust of manager Arsene Wenger, who, on top of that, has been plagued by injuries and missed last season entirely at Bournemouth.
"To buy Mesut Ozil when we have Jack Wilshere, who is just as good, was an insult," Adams told Standard Sport.
"If I was Jack, I would have knocked on Arsene's door and said, 'What on earth are you doing spending 40 million pounds on this player when I can play just as well?'
"Many fans doubted Ozil and his desire to win. When you have a footballer and pay him huge sums of money, he must contribute to victories."
After the season with Bournemouth, Wilshere is expected to return to the Arsenal squad, but rumors of his departure persist and, according to reports, London club West Ham are interested in having him in their ranks.
