London's Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld has revealed that negotiations for a new contract with the club have not progressed at all so far.
Both when he was loaned to Southampton and during his two seasons with the Spurs, the Belgian established himself as one of the best center-backs in the Premier League, so his team's officials want to reward him with a higher salary.
The current 28-year-old footballer's contract with Tottenham is valid until 2018, but the club has the option to extend it for another year. However, in that case, a release clause of only 25 million pounds would come into effect.
Asked about talks of a new contract, Alderweireld replied to Sky Sports: "No news that I am aware of, so, no... nothing."
Losing one of the key parts of his team to Mauricio Pochettino would be very painful, especially after Kyle Walker was sold to Manchester City for 50 million pounds this summer.
Alderweireld is disappointed with Walker's move.
"Everyone is sad that he left," added the Belgian national team player.
"He is one of the best full-backs in the world, but unfortunately, he is moving to another team. On the other hand, we have to focus on winning matches."
In the 80 matches played for Tottenham so far, Alderweireld has scored five goals.
