T. Motto's Ambitions: "Why not start playing with two defenders and seven safeties?"

After finishing his career and coaching graduates of the "Saint-Germain" academy in Paris, Thiago Motta mentioned his ambitious goals.

Born in Brazil, but representing the Italian national team, the defender would like to see a completely different style of football, where conventional tactical formations are abandoned and teams decide to play with two defenders.

"My idea is to play attacking football. To be a team that controls the game, uses high pressure, and performs a lot of off-the-ball movement," said the former footballer.

"I want the player with the ball to have three or four decisions in mind on who to pass to. Sometimes in football, the hardest thing is to do simple things, not control your position, make a pass, and remain uncovered immediately. I don't like it when players on the field play by position numbers.

With attacking football, you can play using a 5-3-2 formation and be a defensive team with a 4-3-3 scheme. It all depends on the players' skill level. I once had a game where full-backs ended the match playing in the 9th and 10th positions. Talking about an attacking style of play does not mean I dislike people like Walter Samuel or Chiellini, who were born to be defenders," explained T. Motta.

"Why not play with a 2-7-2 formation?"- immediately a question, whether such a formation means that there should be 12 players on the field, including the goalkeeper, was asked by a journalist to the Italian. - No, the goalkeeper is counted as one of the seven defenders on the field. In my understanding, the forward is the first defender of the team, and the goalkeeper is the first attacker. It is common for the goalkeeper to initiate the attack, and the forward is the first person to press the opponents while fighting for the ball.
