Theodoros Zagorakis, the captain of the Greek national team, was offered a job as an assistant coach of the Greek national team if the defensive midfielder decided to end his playing career.
The 34-year-old defensive midfielder, who was part of the Greek team that won the 2004 European Championship, currently plays for PAOK in Thessaloniki, but recently stated that he plans to retire from playing.
Vassilis Gagatsis, the president of the Greek Football Federation (EPO), said in an interview with the Greek sports newspaper "Sportime" that he offered T. Zagorakis to work as an assistant to Otto Rehhagel.
"I believe he is the most suitable candidate to be responsible for everything, from the team's equipment, travels and opponents, of course, along with the coach," said V. Gagatsis. "He (T. Zagorakis) believes he can no longer play at a professional level due to his age and mindset, but everything was discussed with him and the coach, so I think he will remain with the national team in the near future."
Greece failed to qualify for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, and the qualification for the 2008 European Championship in Austria and Switzerland will start next September.
