The brightest star of the World Football Championship perishes - the octopus Paul © EuroFootball.com

The octopus Paul, famous for his incredibly accurate predictions of World Cup matches, followed by millions of people around the world, passed away on Monday night. This information was confirmed by representatives of the aquarium in Germany.

"Paul's predictions became perhaps a more buzzed about news story than the World Cup itself. We all loved him very much, so we will miss him immensely," said Stefanie Porwoll, a representative of the "Sea Life" aquarium.

During the World Cup, Paul predicted the outcome of the matches of the German national team. Two identical boxes with food were lowered into the water, with the flags of the competing countries stuck on them.

The octopus accurately predicted all of Germany's matches, as well as the final, in which Spain defeated the Netherlands. In total, he correctly predicted the winners of 8 matches.

Currently, Paul is being kept in a freezer until the aquarium staff decide how to commemorate the death of their biggest star.
