One of the most famous Chinese footballers of recent decades, Li Tie, will spend many years behind bars.

The country's television reported that the 47-year-old celebrity will spend the next 20 years in prison.

He was sentenced for organizing fixed matches in his homeland, with a total of 14.3 million euros mentioned in the investigation, and the crimes were committed between 2015 and 2021.

Even harsher penalties were imposed on Chen Xuyuan, the head of the Chinese FA, who this spring was sentenced to life in prison for taking bribes totaling 10.45 million euros.

In the prime of his career (2002-2006), Li Tie played for Liverpool's Everton team, where he was a teammate of Wayne Rooney.
