Clubs in China, who are spending impressive amounts of money, will have to be even more careful in choosing new foreign players in the future.
The local football federation plans to further limit the number of foreigners.
The goal is simple - they want Chinese players to improve faster, and for the national team to rise from the embarrassing 82nd position in the FIFA rankings.
Currently, clubs are allowed to have four foreign footballers and an additional Asian player.
After the planned tightening at the beginning of next year, the system would change to 3+1.
"The arrival of world-renowned footballers sparks interest and raises the level of the championship, but at the same time it increases the financial burden for teams, and local players do not have the opportunity to shine.
In order to improve the clubs, we want to implement a system that would be related to financial requirements and the number of foreign players," - stated in the federation's announcement.
