The strategist of the Togo national team, Otto Pfister, unexpectedly resigned from his position as head coach on Friday evening, three days before the first Togo match against South Korea, after disagreements with the national team management regarding unpaid bonuses for players.
The 67-year-old German specialist was appointed as the coach of the Togo national team only on February 22 of this year, replacing Stephen Keshi, who had led the team unsuccessfully in the Africa Cup of Nations tournament, and since then has not had a chance to play a single official match with his team.
The coach was preparing the team for their debut in the World Cup in the city of Wangen, but suddenly made the unexpected decision to resign. His former assistant, Kodjovi Mawuena, should lead the team in the match against South Korea.
"When I started working as the coach of Togo, I was promised that everything would be in order with bonuses for the players. However, this did not happen, so I immediately decided to step down. It was a professional decision. However, I no longer work with the team participating in the World Cup and thus lost the dream of my life. But in such a situation, I simply could not continue to work," - regretted O. Pfister.
Previously, O. Pfister has coached the national teams of Rwanda, Senegal, Ivory Coast, and Ghana, as well as worked with clubs in Egypt and Tunisia. It is currently unclear whether the coach would reconsider returning to the team if the bonuses were paid to the players.
