Spanish and European champions were ordered to hold club presidential elections in the near future after the court received complaints from three club members that Joan Laporta had already served his four-year term.
This situation arose because according to the club's statutes, the years are counted from July to June. Since J. Laporta won the presidential elections on June 16, 2003, a few weeks before July 1, they were officially counted as one year of presidency.
Thus, J. Laporta's presidency ended on June 30 of this year.
J. Laporta won the elections promising to attract English national team captain David Beckham to the club. Although he failed to do so, he brought Brazil's beloved Ronaldinho to Barcelona. Since then, the Catalan club has twice become Spanish champions and won the UEFA Champions League in May of this year.
Main rivals of Barcelona, Real Madrid, recently held presidential elections, which were won by Ramon Calderon after defeating four competitors in a fierce and controversial battle.
