After the interrupted match between "Lazio" and "Roma", aggressive "ultras" gathered next to the stadium clashed with police forces.
Furious fans, most of whom were seen wearing "Roma" club merchandise, set fire to and broke chairs as they left, later began throwing burning objects and bottles at the police. The police responded with tear gas. Several police officers were lightly injured.
By midnight, the fights seemed to calm down, and all the troublemakers dispersed or were arrested. However, people who did not want to get involved in the incidents left the stadium peacefully right after the match.
The president of the Italian football league, Adriano Galliani, said that he ordered the referee to interrupt the match. "I made this decision because I was convinced that continuing to play was impossible," said Galliani, adding that the match should be rescheduled.
Meanwhile, the director of "Roma" club, Franco Baldini, stated: "We were ready to continue the match, and we told Galliani, but he decided otherwise, and I think it was the right decision given the circumstances."
The president of "Lazio," Ugo Longo, had a slightly different opinion: "It's just unbelievable, and I have never seen anything like it. Since it was confirmed that the rumor was false, there was no reason to suspend the match. I believe that it only increased tension and caused resentment among people, the result of which were violent clashes with the police."
