The Eritrean national team, arrived to play football in Botswana, sought asylum

Botswana granted asylum to ten Eritrean footballers who refused to return home after the World Cup qualifying match.

On October 13, Eritrea lost 1:3 to Botswana in the World Cup qualifying match.

Most of the Eritrean national team footballers did not want to return home and requested asylum in Botswana.

This is not new. In 2007, 6 footballers sought asylum in Angola, in 2009 – 12 in Kenya, and in 2012 – 18 in Uganda.

Eritrea has widespread human rights violations. The poor situation in the country has forced thousands of people to leave their homeland.

Eritrea denies the violations and claims that those who leave the country are economic migrants.
