The European Parliament would like to see the flag of the European Union on the jerseys of national football teams. It is also recommended that it be displayed during the most important sporting events in the Old Continent.

However, complying with this recommendation will not be mandatory for now.

550 members of the Parliament voted in favor of these recommendations, while 73 voted against. Now they will be considered by the European Commission.

However, there have also been opposing opinions. British MEP Emma McClarkin argued: "Sport in my country has a unique status, and national teams contribute to shaping identity and preserving heritage. The EU cannot impose an artificial European identity by forcing people to wear its flag."
