FIFA president Sepp Blatter does not intend to resign quietly and peacefully. He accused Michel Platini of blackmail - the Swiss claims that he was threatened with imprisonment if he did not step down.
Currently, with the leadership of the European football federations association, the French M. Platini is considered the most likely candidate to take over Blatter's position when the repeat elections are held on February 26th.
Speaking to the Dutch newspaper "de Volkskrant," S. Blatter stated that before the FIFA presidential elections on May 29th, in which he was re-elected for another term, M. Platini threatened his brother. "Tell Sepp that he must step down, otherwise he will end up in jail," quotes S. Blatter M. Platini.
M. Platini himself does not intend to comment on such statements, as he believes that Blatter is simply trying to divert attention from the surrounding FIFA scandal.
Immediately after Blatter's re-election, US officials arrested 14 FIFA members suspected of corruption. In turn, Swiss law enforcement is investigating whether the rights to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups for Russia and Qatar were granted legitimately.
After these scandals, Blatter announced that he will leave the FIFA position after seventeen years in office.
