The History of the Richest English Club: TOP-10 "Man United" Signings

"Manchester United" ranks second in the world in terms of player salaries. It's no wonder that this club also isn't afraid to spend money on impressive transfers.

After Sir Alex Ferguson ended his coaching career, the "Red Devils" had to undergo a revival, and in recent years we have seen more than one very capable newcomer.

According to Transfermarkt.com data, let's take a look at the 10 most expensive "United" purchases of all time, including the first summer addition, Victor Lindelof.

9-10 place - Eric Bailly (£32.3 million). This center back left "Villarreal" last year and became the first footballer acquired by Jose Mourinho.

Despite some injury troubles, he quickly adapted to English football and became an important member of the "Red Devils".

9-10 place - Dimitar Berbatov (£32.3 million). The Bulgarian joined "Man United" in 2008 on the last day of the transfer window and left "Man City" in the cold.

Comparing him to Eric Cantona, the sniper within the "Red Devils" ranks won several titles and surely can take pride in leaving London's "Tottenham".

8th place - Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£35.7 million). Another player acquired last summer. Known as one of the best creators in Europe during his time at Dortmund's "Borussia".

Initially warming the bench despite the excitement of his acquisition, he eventually became one of the team's leaders and shined in the UEFA Europa League final.

7th place - Juan Sebastian Veron (£36.2 million). When he left Roma's "Lazio" in 2001, he became the most expensive purchase for an English club in history.

However, despite being considered a great creator, the Argentine did not showcase his talent in the ranks of "Man United" and later moved to "Chelsea" and played in Italy before finally returning to his homeland.

6th place - Juan Mata (£38 million). A purchase from the winter transfer window of 2014, lured by David Moyes.

Interestingly, he didn't fit in with Chelsea's coach Jose Mourinho at the time, but seems to have found his role even in his reign at the "Red Devils" team and can be considered a successful newcomer.

5th place - Rio Ferdinand (£39.1 million). In 2002, "Man United" once again broke the English transfer record and made this Englishman the most expensive defender in the world for the second time.

Ferdinand became truly legendary, winning 17 trophies during his career in Manchester, including 6 Premier League titles and a UEFA Champions League title.

4th place - Victor Lindelof (£40 million). If his performance is successful, this summer's first purchase could surpass even Ferdinand in terms of transfer amount.

3rd place - Anthony Martial (£51 million). In 2015, media buzzed about another United record - the most paid for a teenager at the time.

The Frenchman immediately impressed with a great goal against Liverpool and had a good first season, but personal problems did not give him peace this year, so his influence on the team will be clarified in the future.

2nd place - Angel Di Maria (£63.75 million). Swapped from Madrid's "Real" to England, this Argentine was the most anticipated newcomer in the entire Premier League at the time.

However, he became one of the not so successful "Red Devils" purchases, as he failed to continue his initial performance. A year later, he went to "Paris Saint-Germain".

1st place - Paul Pogba (£89.25 million). Rightly so, another record, but this time - already in a league of its own. Revealing himself in Turin's "Juventus", Pogba became the subject of the most expensive transfer in history last year.

Due to the impressive amount paid, every step of Pogba was scrutinized and he faced a lot of criticism, some of which was undeserved. The Frenchman has not yet reached his full potential, but had a fairly decent season, and next year, as Jose Mourinho's plans gain clearer shape, he should bear more responsibility in the eyes of the team, not just the fans.
