The hosts started the match more actively, and in the 14th minute A. Laurišas had a good opportunity after a pass from A. Kučys, shooting over the goal. Just six minutes later, the same A. Laurišas was very close to scoring, but his shot hit the crossbar.

The Latvians had their first chance only in the 23rd minute, when Slesačukas, heading down, struck at goal and the goalkeeper V. Žutautas caught the ball. Lithuania soon after a wonderful combination broke ahead - I. Morinas made a pass further into the penalty area to A. Laurišas, who laid off the ball to his teammate, and Morinas shot accurately into the far corner of the goal.

At the beginning of the second half, the hosts once again took the initiative: first, after the substitute N. Astrauskas appeared on the field, his pass dangerously flew near the goal, and later the goalkeeper caught A. Laurišas's shot from the left side.

In the 54th minute, the Latvian footballers were reduced to ten men, as D. Zirnis received a second yellow card for rough play and was sent off the field. Nevertheless, the game gradually equalized: although the Lithuanians once dangerously shot with their head, later the guests threatened the home team's goal twice after penalty shots, and in one episode, as the ball flew towards the goal, it had to be deflected by goalkeeper V. Žutautas.

Meanwhile, the Lithuanians continued to defend successfully, and in one counterattack, I. Morinas, who broke away in front of the goalkeeper, sent the ball into the goal and scored his second goal of the match, securing victory for the Lithuanian national team.

With six minutes remaining, K. Blanas had a good opportunity to soften the result, shooting over the goal from the penalty area without being marked. The Lithuanians won with a two-goal lead and for the first time since 1998 won the Baltic Cup tournament, which had previously been won twice by the Latvians.
