On April 11, 2017, Sergei Wenergold, holding dual Russian and German citizenship, attacked the Dortmund "Borussia" football club's bus with explosive devices as it was heading to the UEFA Champions League quarterfinal match against "Monaco," according to lrytas.lt
It became clear on Tuesday that S. Wenergold, born in Russia and living there until the age of 13 before being taken to Germany by his parents, will serve a 14-year sentence for his crime. The 29-year-old man was found guilty by a German court on 28 counts, but did not satisfy the prosecutors' request. They demanded a sentence of life imprisonment for the Russian.
During the explosion, "Borussia" defender Marc Bartra and a police officer were injured. Before the attack, the Russian purchased 15,000 "Borussia" club stock options online for 78,000 euros.
If the club's stocks were to plummet after the explosion, the Russian would have earned up to 4 million euros after the end of the transaction and the forced sale of "Borussia" shares.
