Interestingly, praise was not only heaped on the club from Catalonia, but also on the usually hostile Madrid newspapers.
The newspaper AS declared in its headline: "Super 'Barcelona'. Spanish football continues to reign at the top of the world." Editor Alfredo Relano described the champions' playing style as "mercilessly demolishing all the sandcastles built hopefully over the years."
Meanwhile, the newspaper Marca, associated with Madrid's "Real," added: "Dreamlike 'Barcelona.' A true hurricane." The two Catalan team's "engines," Xavi and Lionel Messi, received beautiful words: "Xavi was the magical leader, and Lionel Messi - the factor of unpredictability and attacking genius."
Colleagues from "El Mundo" affirmed: "The wonderful 'Barcelona' won their fourth champions title," and "El Pais" stated: "Barca reached the heavens in London." In the latter, we can also find the sentence: "The team has changed the way football is played. It will be infinitely difficult to catch up with the 'Real' club."
"The greatest team of all time," "They are legends," "The best in history" - headlines like these can be found in other publications.
Journalists also praised Carles Puyol, who missed the match on the bench, but entrusted his captain's armband not to just anyone, but to Frenchman Eric Abidal, who recently recovered from a tumor operation. He was the first to raise the won trophies.
However, there were also some bitter flavors: celebrating the victory in Barcelona, 89 people were injured, fifteen of whom had to be taken to the hospital. There were also petty hooligan incidents: throwing bottles, fights. Nevertheless, the celebration will continue on Sunday night when "Barcelona" returns to their hometown.
