UEFA has confirmed that the San Siro stadium was chosen for the final of the Champions League in 2016.
The last time such an event took place at the home arena of AC Milan and Inter was in 2001, when Bayern Munich defeated Valencia after a penalty shootout. In total, the final will be played at the San Siro for the fourth time. The most important matches for the trophy were held there in 1965 and 1970.
For Italian football, this will be somewhat of a relief, as the country was aiming to host the upcoming European Football Championship, but the right was given to France.
UEFA also announced that the final of the Europa League of the same season will take place at the St Jakob Park stadium in Basel. The arena previously hosted the Euro 2008 matches.
The battle for the Europa League trophy will take place on May 18, while the Champions League title will be decided 10 days later.
This season, the finals will be played in Berlin and Warsaw respectively.
