The four strongest Lithuanian women's football teams will start the 2023 season at the "Hikvision" arena, which will host the LMFA Winter Cup tournament for the first time, as well as at the Pilaitė arena.
The Lithuanian Women's Football Association has approved the Winter Cup tournament regulations and schedule. This year, the tournament will feature Šiauliai FK "Gintra", Vilnius MFA "Žalgiris"-MRU, FK "Vilnius", and Kaunas region FC "Hegelmann".
The first matches will be played on February 11, with the special day for Lithuania - March 11 - hosting the final two games and the awards ceremony.
LMFA general director Milda Liužinaitė stated that despite a reduced number of participants, the need for the tournament remains relevant. "Due to significantly increased costs and a lack of suitable arenas in Lithuania, this year we faced challenges in organizing the Winter Cup tournament, but we are pleased that the strongest teams in the country have managed to create conditions to prepare competitively for the upcoming Lithuanian championship and test newcomers."
Most of the tournament matches will take place in Marijampolė, providing a unique opportunity for local football fans to closely watch Lithuanian women's football teams. Perhaps in a few years, we will also have representatives from Šiauliai region in the top league, which would surely be welcomed.
It is noteworthy that the annual capital derby becomes increasingly interesting and intense, attracting more spectators. This showdown can be seen at the Pilaitė football arena already in summer."
