On Wednesday, the remaining four matches of the Coupe de France tournament's round of 16 were played, after which three Ligue 1 clubs - Lille, Bordeaux, and Lyon were forced to withdraw from further competition.
In the first Wednesday's duel, two Ligue 1 teams, Nantes and Lille, met. This time, the Nantes team, occupying the bottom of the country's championship, appeared stronger, defeating the Lille club at the top of the Ligue 1 table with a single goal in extra time.
Another French football giant, Bordeaux, also made it to the quarterfinals after a fierce battle and a penalty shoot-out loss to the lower league Montceau team. Bordeaux club took the lead after a goal scored by Edixon Perea in the 23rd minute, but the hosts managed to equalize the result in the last minute of the second half. In extra time, Bordeaux once again took the lead, but just five minutes later Montceau leveled the score again, so everything was decided by a penalty shootout. The home team performed better here, winning 5-4, thus paving their way to the quarterfinals of the tournament.
The round of 16 match was also much easier for the Ligue 1 club Lens. Playing away, the Lens footballers defeated their opponents from the lower division Clermont team with a score of 4-1 and firmly stepped into the next stage of the tournament.
However, the most intriguing round of 16 match took place in Marseille, where the two leading Ligue 1 clubs - local Marseille and French champions Lyon faced each other. Lyon's footballers led for a long time, after a goal scored by Brazilian Cris in the 17th minute, but in the very end of the match, in the 86th minute, Mickael Pagis sent the ball into Lyon's goal and equalized the score, and a few minutes later, Mamadou Niang secured victory for the Marseille team and eliminated Lyon from further competition.
