After coaching the Bremen "Werder" club for fourteen years, Thomas Schaaf was released from his duties on Wednesday. The contract with the specialist, who was the longest-serving coach in the German championship, was terminated by mutual agreement.
The 52-year-old Schaaf's team won the national championship and the country's cup in 2004, which they won a total of three times, but this season they only just managed to hold on to their place in the top league.
"A few days ago, we sat down and analyzed our situation. We came to the conclusion that we need to be ready to make the decision to start a new chapter," said "Werder" sports director Thomas Eichin.
In total, Schaaf spent four decades with the "Werder" team: he played for the club from the age of eleven and after retiring started working as a youth coach.
