Turks may face UEFA penalty for controversial goal celebration

The Turkish national team won against the Albanian team in the 2020 European Championship qualifying match on Friday with a score of 1:0 (0:0). The victory was determined by Cenk Tosun's goal in the 90th minute. Immediately after the goal, the Turks performed a controversial celebration ritual. After the goal, Turkish football players lined up in a single line and made hand gestures towards their heads as a sign of respect. This was interpreted as a tribute to the Turkish military forces, who are currently conducting a military operation in Syrian territory against the Kurds. According to data from a Syrian human rights group, 143 people, 20 of whom were civilians, were killed on Saturday after Turkish military attacks. It is unclear how the European Football Association (UEFA) will react to the behavior of the Turkish football players, as political actions during matches are prohibited. After 7 rounds in the European Championship qualifying Group H, the Turkish national team is leading and is just one step away from securing a ticket to the continental championship in 2020.
