UEFA has been seriously considering possible changes to the Champions League knockout rounds.
"The Times” reports that European football officials have been pondering whether it is worthwhile to abolish extra time in the event of a draw starting from next season.
The main motive is to prevent players from becoming overly fatigued due to a congested match schedule.
However, opponents of the idea argued that requiring teams to take penalties would give an advantage to the team playing at home.
Ultimately, UEFA dismissed this idea.
It is estimated that in 2021, when the away goals rule was abolished, teams played a total of 37 extra times in the Champions League, and winners were determined by a penalty shootout in 15 matches.
