Hooliganism in Greek football is not a novelty, but the scenes from Saturday's national cup final shocked many.
In the decisive duel, Athens AEK club defeated "Atromitos" 3-0, but the match had to be interrupted with about a minute left to play, as hundreds of AEK fans stormed the pitch and attacked police officers.
Furthermore, hooligans assaulted the opposing team's players and fans, as well as damaged the equipment of the national broadcaster NET.
Plastic chairs, bottles, torn advertising banners were thrown onto the pitch. However, the police eventually managed to stabilize the situation.
"I have never seen anything like this in football. Players had to fight to protect their families. AEK fans pointed guns at them," lamented "Atromitos" coach Giorgos Donis.
Security guard Andreas Tatos also added: "This is a disgraceful evening for football."
