The English club chose a 3-5-2 formation on the field, instead of the 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation used last year.
"We tried a new system that we only practiced twice during training. However, the boys eagerly accepted the information and played fantastically today," said the Dutchman.
"Last week we were missing ten of the players who played today, but in order to make radical changes, you need to take that risk once. Another formation that "Man Utd" used and can play is 4-3-3."
"Now we have forty players, but the composition is not yet balanced," said van Gaal.
