W. Sneijder becomes a record holder: I had to sacrifice a lot

Wesley Sneijder is happy to have become the player with the most matches played for the Dutch national team, but also emphasized that he had to sacrifice a lot for it.

The 33-year-old veteran played his 131st match yesterday against Luxembourg, surpassing the legendary goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar.

Not only that, the midfielder also scored a goal, and his national team won with a score of 5-0, rising to third place in the qualification group A for the World Cup.

"I have now played 131 matches for the Oranje. This number is magical for me from now on," said Sneijder.

"Becoming the player with the most matches played for the Dutch national team is absolutely fantastic. I have always worked hard for it and sacrificed a lot to get here. So, it is a truly special feeling, especially because today is my birthday."

"Also, I scored a goal and we won, so I can say that I am a happy man."

However, Sneijder had to admit that Sweden's victory over the French hindered the Dutch path to the World Cup. Currently, both mentioned national teams are three points ahead of the Dutch players, and in order to qualify for Russia next year, they must secure at least second place in the group.
