Almost becoming a hero of the Netherlands, Wout Weghorst remembered one of the most memorable matches of the recent World Cup between the national teams of the Netherlands and Argentina.

In the quarterfinals, the striker dramatically extended the overtime with a controversial "double" but eventually had to admit defeat to the Argentinians after a penalty shootout.

W. Weghorst revealed to "De Telegraaf" that he wanted to show respect to Lionel Messi after the match, but Messi did not agree with that.

"I wanted to show respect to Messi after the match, but he didn't want that. I think he was still mad at me. Well, what can you do. I see it as a compliment because he knows who I am. So, I must have done something right then."

"I always give my all and I did the same in the quarterfinal. I fought against Messi, there were a few incidents between us. I think he didn't like it, he was surprised. But I have a lot of respect for him. I think he is one of the greatest of all time," said the Besiktas striker.
