London strategist Arsene Wenger admitted to doing everything possible to prevent Robin van Persie from ending up at another English Premier League club.
However, the efforts of the French specialist were in vain: in the nearest future, the Dutchman, who has already undergone a medical examination, will move to "Man Utd" for about 30 million euros.
"We tried to avoid it at all costs, but we failed," Wenger told "TF1." "Of course, I would have been happier if he went to a team in another country, like Paris St. Germain."
"Man Utd" knows Robin well and knows his level. He is a special footballer: I have not seen many players perform the first touch as well as him, in addition, he is technical and moves wonderfully on the field. It's sad that we lost him, but by refusing to extend the contract, we had no other choice but to sell. We will have to swallow another bitter pill."
And continued: "Money is only a small comfort because they don’t step onto the pitch and play. Of course, there will be more opportunities for newcomer Olivier Giroud, but there is a gap left that others will have to fill."
In addition, defender Thomas Vermaelen was confirmed as the new captain of Arsenal.
