After the matches played on Saturday of the 16th round, the new Bundesliga leader at least temporarily became the "Werder" club, defeating "Hertha" 3-1 at home and surpassing the previously leading "Schalke" team in points. In the match against "Hertha", the "Werder" club took the lead after just over twenty minutes, when the newcomer Diego, who played a handball foul by J. Simunic, successfully converted an eleven-meter penalty. Just two minutes later, J. Simunic corrected his mistake by equalizing the score and scoring his second goal in 165 Bundesliga matches.
However, the Bremen team was not inclined to share points at home and before half-time, the excellent M. Klose scored two goals again, cementing his club's advantage. After this match, the recently elected German footballer of the month M. Klose rose to the top of the list of the most goal scorers and has already scored ten times this season.
Meanwhile, other contenders for the title fared worse - "Stuttgart" in the match against "Mainz" on Friday evening failed to defeat the absolute league outsider and the match ended goalless, while the defending champions "Bayern" had to settle for a draw at home against "Gladbach."
The Munich club led from the 22nd minute, when M. Demichelis scored with a precise headshot from a penalty by Bastian Schweinsteiger, but soon the visitors equalized the score and held it even until the end of the match.
A successful round was for the "Borussia" team, which snatched a victory against "Wolfsburg" at their stadium. The only and winning goal of the match was scored from close range during added time by the team's attacking leader E. Smolarek.
The same result ended the match in Cotbus, where the local "Cottbus" team lost to the "Hannover" team, in whose ranks after Jiri Stajner's cross, S. Cherundolo scored a goal. The three points allowed "Hannover" to rise to the tenth place, while the league newcomers "Cottbus", who started the season successfully, now occupy only the thirteenth position.
