Sports championships attract a lot of sports enthusiasts every year. Although large-scale events have been banned in recent years due to the global coronavirus pandemic, this year is completely different. It is not surprising that after a long break, spectators are eager to see their favorite players and support them during the competitions. So what sporting events will delight sports enthusiasts in the second half of this year?

World Athletics Championships

Every two years the IAAF organizes the World Athletics Championships, which will be held in Eugene, United States from July 15-24. In this championship, you will see Lithuanians: the 2017 world champion Andrius Gudžius, high jumper Airinė Palšytė, and javelin thrower Edis Matusevičius.

European Swimming Championships

You can start rejoicing now: at the 2022 European Swimming Championships, you will see Lithuanian swimmer Rūta Meilutytė, three-time European Championship medalist Danas Rapšys, and rising star Kotryna Teterevkova. The championship will take place in Rome, Italy from August 11-21.

European Athletics Championships

Another highly anticipated event is the European Athletics Championships. It will be held in Munich, Germany from August 15-21. The famous discus thrower Andrius Gudžius, who won the European Championship title in Germany in 2018, is expected to participate in the championship.

European Basketball Championships

One of the most anticipated sporting events this year is the European Basketball Championship, which will take place in four countries: Germany, Italy, Czech Republic, and Georgia. In the group stage, 24 teams will play in Cologne, Milan, Prague, and Tbilisi, and from the quarter-finals onwards in Berlin. The Lithuanian national basketball team will also participate in the European Championship, starting in Group B. Our team will play against France, Slovenia, Germany, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Hungary. The last European Basketball Championship in 2017 was won by Slovenia and they will seek to defend their champions title. The Lithuanian team will aim to add to their collection of medals, which includes 3 gold, 3 silver, and one bronze. The European Basketball Championship will take place from September 1-18.

Women's World Basketball Championships

After the European Basketball Championship, another eagerly awaited event for basketball enthusiasts is the Women's World Basketball Championships. The championship will take place from September 22 to October 1. The competition will be held in Sydney, Australia, with a total of 12 teams competing. The Lithuanian women's team will not participate in this championship.

World Cup Soccer Championship

This year, football fans will also have something to look forward to. The long-awaited World Cup Soccer Championship will take place in Qatar from November 21 to December 18. Unfortunately, the Lithuanian national team will not participate in this championship. The French team won 5 out of 8 matches in the qualifiers and finished first in their group to secure a spot in the championship, where they will defend their 2018 champions title won in Russia.
