“Aston Villa” goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez once again proved on Thursday that he is a true penalty shootout specialist.

The 31-year-old Argentine saved two opponents' shots in the penalty shootout of the UEFA Europa Conference League quarterfinals against “Lille” and helped his team advance to the semifinals.

However, many football fans had many questions about E. Martinez's involvement in the penalty shootout.

After saving the first penalty, “Aston Villa” goalkeeper started provoking “Lille” fans and was shown a yellow card for it. Interestingly, E. Martinez had already received a yellow card during the regular time of the match, but he was not shown a red card.

Discussions erupted on social media instantly, claiming that the referee forgot to remove the Argentine from the penalty shootout, but in fact, everything was done exactly as indicated in the football rules.

According to the football rules, yellow cards received during the match or extra time do not apply in the penalty shootout. This means that for a player to be removed from the penalty shootout, they need to receive two yellow cards or a direct red card.

However, if a player receives a red card during the regular time or extra time, they cannot participate in the penalty shootout.
