The increasingly strong club has signed the security of the team and the Ecuador national team Luis Antonio Valencia for one year.
The 21-year-old player, who can play in both right and central defensive midfield positions, is now awaiting a work permit.
"Antonio is something new for the Wigan team," said the team's head coach Paul Jewell. "He is gifted with special abilities, is very fast, and works hard."
L.A. Valencia has played 19 matches wearing the national team jersey, and also reached the World Cup quarter-finals with the national team, where they were defeated by England with a score of 0-1.
"He played only one season in Europe, and I am confident that he will adapt well to the Premier League matches," added P. Jewell.
The talented security guard moved to Villarreal last year, but spent most of the season on loan at Recreativo.
This summer, Wigan added Emmerson Boyce, Emile Heskey, Chris Kirkland, Denny Laandzaat, Fitz Hall, and the young Tomaš Čyvka to their squad.
