The first round of the group stage of the 2022 Women's European Football Championship has ended. There were no major surprises in the first stage, and as usual, the tournament was opened by the tournament hosts. In the tournament taking place in England, England's women's national team defeated Austria 1-0 in the first match. Despite the fact that the English team were clear favorites in this match, it was not easy. England's goalkeeper Mary Earps had to work a few times, and Bethany Mead scored the winning goal in the 18th minute. In other group matches, Norway beat Northern Ireland 4-1.
In Group B, two matches took place - Spain beat Finland 4-1, and the German footballers left no chance for Denmark (4-0).
In Group C, the teams shared a point - Olympic vice-champions Sweden played a 1-1 draw with the Netherlands women. Portugal and Switzerland also shared a point in a goal-filled match (2-2).
Perhaps the most unexpected result took place in Group D, where France beat Italy 5-1 (after the first half - 5-0). By the way, today marks precisely a year since Italy's men triumphed in the European Championship. Of course, the Italian women's national team is not as strong and dominant as the men's team, but an unexpected upset occurred in the first match. PSG defender Grace Geyoro led the French team forward. She is currently the top scorer of the tournament after her "hat-trick".
In other group matches, Belgium and Iceland drew 1-1. All tournament matches are broadcast on lrt.lt. LRT Plus shows the latest matches, which start at 10 pm Lithuania time.
