In 1998, World Cup winner and 2000 European Championship winner with the French national team Christian Karembeu announced on Friday that he has ended his career.
"I regret nothing," C. Karembeu told a French radio station on Friday. "I want to dedicate more time to myself and my family. I played football for 17 years. It's time for a change."
The 34-year-old defender, who has been without a club since last June when "Bastia" dropped to the second French division "Ligue 2", hails from the French territory in the Pacific Ocean, New Caledonia, and played 53 matches for the French national team, scoring one goal.
He played for "Nantes" for five years, then traveled across Europe - playing for "Sampdoria", Madrid's "Real", "Middlesbrough", Piraeus' "Olympiakos", "Servette" and the aforementioned "Bastia" clubs.
C. Karembeu became French champion with "Nantes" in 1995 and won the UEFA Champions League with "Real" in 1998. He also won the Greek championship twice representing Piraeus' "Olympiakos".
